Corazones Libres believes every child in the Dominican Republic deserves the chance to learn, grow, and dream without limits. Yet poverty still stands in the way of education for many; only 56% of adolescents from the poorest households attend secondary school, and just 12% go on to higher education. We are committed to changing that reality by providing academic support, mentorship, and family-centered resources that help students stay in school, believe in themselves, and pursue brighter futures.
By combining daily nutrition support with academic tutoring and family coaching, we create spaces where learning can flourish. Together with local educators and volunteers, we’re helping children stay in school, build confidence, and unlock the opportunities they deserve.

Education Inequality in Our Communities
In the Dominican Republic, poverty continues to shape who has access to education and who is left behind. Only 56% of adolescents from the poorest households attend secondary school, compared to 88% of their higher-income peers, and just 12% go on to higher education, compared to 49% of students from wealthier families. These gaps reflect more than academic differences; they reveal how economic hardship limits opportunity long before adulthood.
How Basic Needs Affect Learning
For many students in underserved communities, barriers to education begin at home. Limited resources, food insecurity, and financial instability make it harder for children to focus in class, keep up academically, or remain in school at all. Nationwide, about 14% of people experience food insecurity, and nearly one in three households struggles to access a nutritious diet. When basic needs are unmet, learning becomes secondary to survival.

Corazones Libres addresses these challenges by strengthening the conditions that allow students to learn. Through academic support, mentorship, and consistent nutrition assistance for families, we remove barriers that stand between children and their education. By supporting both learning and well-being, we help students stay in school, improve performance, and move toward futures defined by opportunity, not circumstance.
